Offshore Wind Announcement

Dominion Energy CEO Tom Farrell was joined by Virginia Governor Ralph Northam on Friday as Virginia took significant steps forward in the development of Virginia's first offshore wind facility Today I'm proud to announce the reason we're here is we filed, actually we filed just after one o'clock a request with the State Corporation Commission for approval of two new 6 megawatt offshore wind turbines

For more than a hundred years our mandate at Dominion Energy has been to meet the public's need for power instantaneously, safely, reliably and affordably We also tried to do so strive to do so sustainably For Dominion that means moving away from older sources of power like coal We are a national leader among utilities reducing our emissions by more than twice the average utility in the United States I'm just so pleased that Virginia is on the leading edge in advancing clean energy resources statewide and today we have the exciting opportunity to jumpstart the offshore wind industry off of our coast that will provide clean and reliable power for generations to come

The project will be the only slowly the second wind, offshore wind project in the country It will be the only one in the United States owned and operated by an electric utility company It will be the only one constructed in a federal lease area and it will give us the opportunity to demonstrate that wind turbines can safely coexist with the world's largest naval base and other military installations In the dock just beside us here the survey vessel Gerry Borderlon is preparing to spend the next month scouring the ocean floor of the project site seeking out military, unexploded, hopefully, unexploded military ordnance or any other obstruction that could interfere with construction of the turbines The offshore wind project will be located about 27 miles off the coast of Virginia Beach and two six megawatt turbines will sit in about 80 feet of water and rise over 550 feet above the ocean surface but will not be visible from the Virginia Beach shoreline

The facility is expected to begin generating emissions free energy for customers by December 2020
